As i said before, i'm on a 406 sbc project. I don't know if i need or not a small base circle cam. My interest is on the Hydraulic Roller Voodoo Retro-Fit Lunati 20120711K (60111). ALTHOUGH i had a 355 with a big solid lift cam, and brodix 200race rite heads that was 11.5-1. changed the bottom end to a 383, dropped the compression to 8.5-1 (for procharger) and went to solid roller. the 383 would KILL the 355 motor for motor. in other words the low compression 383 would kill the higher compression 355. both can run well.I realize this is a older thread but I wrote this years ago. In my opinion, if someone owns a 350 block that is a good block, and wants to build a better motor then a 350, a 383 dollar for dollar is about equal and will usually out perform a equal 350. however, if starting from sctrach, without a block, a 400 based motor is a much better choice. There's a 400 out there that you may not know a lot about until you bust it down. A 383 option has been thrown out there and you say you are on a TIGHT budget.
